Originally, I had no intention on buying it, but we all know how that ends... </p><p>It was sitting since 1992 and required some extraction to get it out of it's home. Surprisingly, all 4 tires took air and it winched up on the trailer quite easily. Overall, it was in great shape. It was running and driving with a 350/350 combo and a Camaro subframe. The car is fairly solid with very little rust. The engine ran well but nothing was cleaned up when it was installed. The car did have a new wiring harness, but like everything else, it need some attention. Ultimately, I wanted a good reliable driver that I could load the family in, hook up the camper and have a fun weekend.</div><div><br /></div><div>The more I investigated, the more that I was unsatisfied with the installation of the subframe. So out came the engine to address a laundry list of issues. The Pontiac frame was quite a bit wider than the subframe where the legs come down. Instead of cutting the legs off, there were copious amounts of angle iron used to bridge the gaps. The X-frame was cut fairly severely and the transmission cross member prevented any exhaust being able to be tucked up out of the way. I assume whoever installed the subframe, installed a set of swing pedals and power booster. It was extremely reliable, a little quirky and was awesome in the snow. While on my way home one evening it just shut off at a stop light. After pushing the car into a parking lot, it was found that it had no fuel pressure. Apparently, the fuel pumps...yes, there are two fuel pumps...are know to go bad. I initially looked at fixing it but for the price of the fuel pumps and the effort to change then, I bought a 5.3l out of a 2004 Tahoe. At the time, there were only a couple 240's that had been swapped and it looked like a fairly easy ordeal.<div><p style="text-align: left;">So, out came the original 2.3l and I dove head first into making a fun, reliable, standard shift daily. Well, after a couple months of working on it, customer's projects kept coming in. I eventually push it out beside the build and it sat for 3 years.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Before pushing it out, I was able to get the engine bolted in, completely rewire the car, figure out the majority of the hard stuff like accessory drives, exhaust and mount a clutch pedal. Initially, I wanted to run stock truck manifolds but the flanges interfered with the frame. I did not want any wiring issues so it was completely rewired with a new aftermarket harness. The engine is an all new small block Chevy with a vintage 471 blower and a Tremec 5 speed. It's pretty tight in the engine bay, so we modified a set of C10 headers to work. We also addressed several other little issues while the engine was out that was done from previous engine installs.<br />

The passenger side header from a C10 fit without issue, the Driver's side was a different story. The steering box, steering column, master cylinder and clutch linkage were all in the way.<br />

His grandfather bought this thing new and it has been on his family's farm every since. His goal was to get it back together but still use it like a truck. He definitely wanted a 5 speed for it and so I rounded up all of the parts he needed for the swap.<br />

Well fast forward 3 years later and the truck is all together and on the road. However, it handled like a stock '46 Chevy truck and was legitimately scary to drive over 60 mph. So, with a little help from Fatman Fabrications, we installed a new front end and addressed a bunch of little issues.<br />

I was amazed how the original floor was not symmetrical at all. The transmission and engine were centered in the car but the floor had a much more pronounced hump on the driver's side compared to the passenger's side.</div>

Since the transmission I used had an electronic speedometer and the factory speedometer was mechanical, I could have either found and '83-'88 tail shaft or use a speedometer drive. There are a couple of companies that are now offering these. <a href="http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=886/mode=prod/prd886.htm" target="_blank">Dakota Digital</a> and <a href="https://www.speedhut.com/ecommerce/product/2585/SPEEDBOX%E2%84%A2-GPS-VSS-to-Mechanical-Drive-Speed-Converter-(Cable-Included)" target="_blank">Speed Hut</a> both have options. Speed Hut's version can be used either with a VSS signal, GPS signal or a combination of both. They were a bit more expensive and had a 3 week lead time. Dakota Digital's box only uses a VSS signal but it was very easy to hook up and calibrate....just follow the directions. Best part is that with their dealer network, I was able to get one within a couple of days.<br />

I made a mounting bracket so that it could be mounted under the dash. The box came with a 24" long speedometer cable that fit perfectly.<br />

I made an adapter for the Ford "narrow" pattern. This adapter uses both T5 bolt patterns. It worked out really well since the bottom holes of the Ford bellhousing line up with the late '93-'96 S-10 T5's. The adapter kit included a new pilot bearing, a bushing for the release bearing, a new clutch disc and the adapter itself.<br />

It's not every day that you get a chance to work on a steam powered vehicle. This is a '37 Packard that was converted to steam in 1940. The guy who built this used early 20's Stanley Steamer parts...actually, he used the entire drive train and then some from the Stanley. It's a bit of impressive engineering.<br />

This last month has been crazy and I apologize if I have been hard to get a hold of or haven't had your parts to ship. There was a multitude of reasons why I wasn't able to dedicate the time needed over this last month to the business. First and foremost, there was some family medical issues that had to be taken care of. As much as I love this business and working with customers, my family comes first. <br />
<br />
As hard as I try to plan and only work on one big project at a time, things just so happened to line up where I was trying to jungle 3 large builds simultaneously. While trying to help customers out, I put myself in a position where I simply couldn't keep up.<br />
<br />
On top of it all, my CNC mill decided that it needed some time off. I have to say that I learned quite a bit about the control systems on vintage Fadal machining centers while diagnosing the issues.<br />
<br />
Well, finally, I am starting to get caught back up. The mill is up and running, the never ending '50 Chevy convertible is almost done and very shortly, I should have an empty shop to maybe work on my own project.<br />
<br />
So, we are still here, still kicking, and still machining parts. Thank you for your patience and understanding.<br />

We've used the Summit Racing brand paint in the past and it is pretty impressive. It sticks to anything, it is a very tough finish and you can spill brake fluid on it and not hurt it.<br />

Even though it came in for an engine swap, we decided to go ahead and replace the wiring.<br />

I used an aftermarket harness from Speedway Motors. I like this harness for the simple fact that it used a molded fuse box. Many of the aftermarket harness are made from separate piece that are clipped or screwed together.<br />
<br />
There really isn't much room under these Chevy dashboards. I had to make a mount for the fuse panel that bolted to the driver's side hood hinge. It's a little difficult to get to, but it was about the only place available. <br />

Whenever I wire, I always crimp, solder and heat shrink the connectors. It makes for a very reliable connection that will be trouble free.<br />

With the Mustang II front end the spring towers are somewhat in the way. Also, since we used a bolt in front cross member, we opted to make the engine mounts bolt in as well. You have to start somewhere, so we made the passenger engine side first and then moved to the frame mount.<br />

To get the car to sit where we wanted it, we ended up using 2" dropped spindles. The customer wants it to sit lower, but we are going to wait till the springs are installed and settle after some drive time.<br />

Since the plans changed a couple of days after the car was dropped off, all of the parts had to be ordered. The first thing to show up was the TCI rear spring kit. So, that is where things started.<br />
<br />
The spring brackets bolted into the original holes with the exception of a couple of new holes needing to be drilled. Because this car originally had a torque tube rear end, the center line of the rear end sat 2" behind the locator pins on the original springs. With this kit, the locating pins are in the correct location on the new springs which definitely simplifies the install.<br />

The kit was fairly comprehensive and well put together with the exception of the u-bolt plates. These placed the u-bolts approximately 1/2" away from the perches on each side. As the bolts were tightened, the plates the wanted to bend.<br />

As for the rear end itself, the owner supplied a Ford 9" from a '57-'58 Ford truck. It measured 61" from wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange. The original rear end measured 60". When mocked up, this extra 1" of width prevented the fender skirts from fitting so a narrower rear end was needed. The other downside to the early truck 9" rear end is that they had a 12" x 1-3/4" shoe that is almost impossible to find a drum for.<br />
<br />
After a bit of searching, we came up with a '57 Ford Fairlaine 9" rear end. This one measured 58" from wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange. These also had a narrow shoe that is difficult to find drums for but luckily I happened across a set of much more common '61 galaxy 11" x 2-1/2" backing plates and drums at a recent swapmeet.<br />

The factory wheels are 15 x 5 with a 3-1/2" back spacing. Using the Fairlaine rear end, a 15 x 6" wheel with a 3-1/2" back spacing works out almost perfect with the hubcaps and skirts. There is a 1/2" between the skirt and hubcap and there is an 1" between the tire sidewall and the frame.</div>

Since the 9" had a 5 on 4-1/2" wheel bolt circle, the pattern had to be changed to a 5 on 4-3/4" wheel bolt circle for the GM wheels. While there are wheel pattern drill jigs available, I ended up making my own.</div>

I actually did one several years ago and wished I would have documented it a little better. So, here's my chance.<br />

First things first, the material needs to be cut roughly the correct size. There is quit a bit of shrinking to be done and any extra material will only hinder the process. I used some thin paper to make a rough template. Everywhere there is a fold, the metal will be required to be shrunk.<br />

I use a set of thumbnail shrinking dies in my Pullmax. There are some disadvantages of using a Pullmax to shrink with compared to using a power hammer. Mainly, the Pullmax doesn't compensate for the change in material thickness. A power hammer has a spring loaded anvil and tends to be much less abrupt. As I have not gotten very far on my power hammer build, so this is really my only option.<br />

After a slight adjustment on the die spacing, I have the basic shaped roughed out. You can see my markings where the front needs to be brought out or raised "up". It appears that I actually shrunk it a bit too much, however, the English wheel will have no problem stretching it back out. <br />

With the front of the engine bolted in, now comes the transmission mount. <br />

As for the transmission, I was originally planning on using an S-10 T5 from a '93-'96. These are the ones with the Ford bolt pattern but the GM bearing retainer. These are easy to find, usually very inexpensive and are World Class. I also happen to have 6 of them on the shelf. So, when I happen to hurt one, I will have a replacement. <br />

What's nice about the LS platform is that they accept a standard GM aluminum bellhousing. I just so happened to have several aluminum truck bellhousings that would clear the LS flywheel. Being truck bellhousings, they have a 5-1/8" diameter register. Using a T5-9495-518 adapter plate, everything bolted up as it was suppose to. Not only does this adapter have the Ford bolt pattern with the 4-11/16" bore for the GM bearing retainer, it has a 5-1/8" diameter male register for the bellhousing.<br />

Once I set set the engine in with the transmission bolted on, The S-10 shifter was too far forward. after some quick measuring, the Camaro tail shaft place the shifter exactly in the center of the stock cutout.<br />

The problem with the Camaro T5's is that they are rotated at 15 degrees for clearance issues. This means that the rear mount is rotated as well. So, to over come this, I designed an offset mounting bracket to obtain the correct orientation. To check the fit, I 3D printed it first before I will eventually machine it from solid.<br />

The plates I got had several different mounting locations so, I had some flexibility. I like using the old style mounts because they lend themselves easily to retrofits and they are ridiculously cheap. I think these are from an early Nova.<br />

In the middle set of holes, the mounts lined up fairly well to the stock 4 cylinder mounting holes.<br />

I turned some solid bar down and drill a clearance hole for a 3/8 bolt. This fit in between the ears of the new mounts. Using some 1" x 2" rectangular tubing, I welded the standoffs.<br />

These usually interfere with the cross members and end up hanging down low. There are several aftermarket companies that are producing oil pans that are based on the truck pan but are 2-1/2" shorter. However, these pans cost as much as what I paid for the entire engine.<br />

So, my solution was to section it.<br />

You can see how tall this pan is. These engine hold 6 quarts of oil and by cutting 2-1/4" out, I am removing about 3/4 of a quart of capacity. I am not too concerned with this as I am essentially making this the same size as the aftermarket Holley pan. Also, I know that I will be changing oil on a regular bases as well as checking it often.<br />

It took a bit to get through with a cut off wheel. I actually ended up using my band saw after it was taking so long. Since the sump is wider at the top than the bottom, I have to add a little filler strip.<br />

It's a quirky little car but it's fun to drive and is decent on gas. Well, on my way home, there was a stumble and then....nothing. The engine shut off and forced me to push it into a gas station in the middle of rush hour traffic. Fun times.<br />

Up to that point, the car has been rock solid reliable. <br />
<br />
After a bit of parking lot diagnostics, it was determined that the secondary fuel pump decided to quit. Yes, this car has two fuel pumps...those crazy Swedish.<br />
<br />
On top of the fuel pump, this thing has had some wiring gremlins that have been there since the day I brought it home. Apparently, wiring issues are very common to the 240 range. I've been debating to do something with this thing for some time and finally, this episode pushed me over.<br />
<br />
The original plan was to put a 2JZ in it...however, that was going to be quite the undertaking as I didn't have any engine management, tuning software and I still need needed several thousand dollars worth of parts such as turbos and what not. It was going to be a steep learning curve. This would have been all fine if I had the time to devote to it.<br />
<br />
Luckily, there happened to be a 5.3L LS motor sitting in the shop.<br />

Deconstruction is my favorite part. I attempted to not cut any of the wiring. Even though, I plan on completely rewiring the car, I still might need parts of the harness and connectors. Plus, I figured that someone, somewhere might need a harness.<br />

It is nice how the entire front unbolts. The hardest part to remove was actually the headlights. Of course, the studs pressed into the plastic housings did not want to corporate and I ended up having to cut them with a torch.<br />
